Rodney Smith steps up in relief of injured Brooks

first_img“I knew heading in that Shannon was banged up and he was going to be out,” said Smith. “So I just had to do my best and keep the team on my back as much as I could and I think I did an okay job with it.” Rodney Smith steps up in relief of injured BrooksThe sophomore rushed 125 yards, a new career-best, in the game Thursday evening.Bridget BennettGophers running back Rodney Smith makes a touchdown during the Gophers’ game against the Oregon State Beavers on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016 at TCF Bank Stadium. Jack WhiteSeptember 2, 2016Jump to CommentsShare on FacebookShare on TwitterShare via EmailPrintThe Gophers had to make adjustments when their leading rusher from last season, Shannon Brooks, broke a bone in his right foot on August 9.Sophomore Rodney Smith was put in the starting lineup, while Brooks watched from the sidelines during the Gophers’ opening game against Oregon State Thursday evening.Smith stepped up to provide the Gophers with two touchdowns and 125 rushing yards, which tied his season total in touchdowns from last year, and set a career-high for rushing yards in a game. “He’s a really good zone-stretch player on the edge with the pulling lineman,” said head coach Tracy Claeys. “He’s very patient with the blocks and finds where to make the cut. He’s a tough kid. He doesn’t get credit enough for how tough he is.”The Beavers had more total yards and passing yards than the Gophers, but Minnesota dominated the run game against its non-conference opponent. The Gophers had 150 rushing yards to the Beavers’ 89. Smith was the leading rusher for Minnesota. Brooks led the team in rushing with 709 yards and also had seven touchdowns last season. Smith was a close second in rushing with 670 yards and two touchdowns.Smith said he was prepared to start in the opening game. One of the ways Minnesota succeeded in the run game against the Beavers was through the use of the read option play. Both Smith, and redshirt senior quarterback Mitch Leidner, averaged 5 or more yards per carry against the Beavers defense. Leidner amassed 76 rushing yards on 13 carries in the 30-23 victory over Oregon State. Leidner faked a handoff to Smith and ran in for the one-yard score to give Minnesota a seven-point lead near the end of the fourth quarter. Minnesota had four rushing touchdowns between Smith and Leidner, who each had two apiece. “There were a few [reads] I missed on, no question there, but there were a couple I hit right on the nose and we were able to get a good play out of it,” Leidner said. “I’m lucky to have a good running back in Rodney Smith to make me right in some of those situations.”The only other ball carriers for the Gophers, besides Leidner and Smith, were junior running back Kobe McCrary and senior wide receiver Drew Wolitarsky. McCrary looks to be the third option when Brooks gets back, but Smith had 25 carries to McCrary’s two. Claeys said the team would be better once Brooks returns from injury.“We’ll give it to the hot hand, that’s what we’ll do, Claeys said. “But we’ll have two extremely good running backs in there.”last_img read more

Harris leads Parkway to 79-56 victory over Bastrop

first_imgxRussell [email protected] The numbers produced in Friday’s Parkway-Bastrop game at Bastrop were absolutely staggering.First, there’s the score itself. The Panthers, ranked No. 2 in Class 5A, won 79-56.The teams combined for 1,538 yards. Parkway had 734 (420 rushing, 314 passing). Bastrop had 804 (370 rushing, 434 passing). The Panthers ran 53 plays, an average of 13.4 yards per play, and got 26 first downs. Bastrop ran 103 plays and got 37 first downs.Parkway quarterback Brandon Harris accounted for eight touchdowns. He completed 16 of 26 passes for 314 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed 12 times for 158 yards and four touchdowns. But the most important number to Parkway coach David Feaster was three. The Panthers, whose Week 2 game against Arkansas High was cancelled because of inclement weather, are now 3-0 on the season.“We started out with the hardest schedule in the history of Parkway high school, and we have run the gauntlet of a very tough non-district,” Feaster said. “We’re tickled pink to be undefeated at this point. Bastop is a tough place to play.“They grabbed the momentum in he first half and I didn’t think we’d ever get it back. So the fact that we overcame all that and played well on the road is going to be very important to us obviously down the road.”Parkway led 47-40 at the half and then pulled away quickly in the second.“We got a turnover in the first half that gave us a little bit of an edge with the lead, but they came back and made some big plays on us,” Feaster said. “They ran the ball on us at will at times and they threw the ball well, too.”Feaster said there is some cause for concern that his defense gave up that many yards and points, but he isn’t worried about it.“Sure we would love to beat them 79-0, but it is what it is,” he said. “Our defense played bend but don’t break the first two games. And these guys were able to break us at times. Now is it something that we’re worried about? No. It’s no great surprise. We graduated some very good defensive players and went into this season saying we would have to have guys really step up.”Harris’ touchdown runs covered 2, 40, 3 and 74 yards. His touchdown passes went to Artavious Lynn (19 yards), Brodrick Jefferson (23 yards), Cory Hamilton (55 yards) and Demetrius McAtee (24 yards).McAtee rushed for 108 yards on six carries. William McKnight scored on a 14-yard run, and Micah Lacy had a 4-yard TD run.Hamilton had five receptions for 139 yards, and Jefferson had six for 119.
