Rangers’ Alves and John ruled out of Old Firm derby

first_imgRangers will be without Bruno Alves for their match against Celtic after the defender failed to recover from a calf injury in time.Declan John has also been ruled out through injury with Lee Hodson expected to replace the left-back.Alves, who was acting as stand-in captain in the absence of Lee Wallace, limped out of the League Cup win over Partick Thistle on Tuesday after 76 minutes. John picked up in a thigh injury during the match.Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha hoped that Alves had a chance of making the crucial match at Ibrox but STV has learned that the influential defender has been told to rest and may be out for a couple of weeks. The absence of the experienced Portugal international means that teenage defender Ross McCrorie is likely to make his Old Firm debut.McCrorie replaced Alves on Tuesday and afterwards Caixinha was effusive in his praise for the player, tipping him to reach the top of the game and saying he would be ready to face Celtic if required.“Ross McCrorie is going to be one of the best centre halves in history, not just for this club but for this country,” he said. “You just need to see what he did. He was brilliant. “It’s not about age or names. It’s about getting the chance to prove it. “I have no concerns about him. I never had and never will have. If he needs to play on Saturday [against Celtic], he will play.”last_img
