West Bengal sports and transport minister Madan Mitra supporters launch campaign for his release

first_imgJailed West Bengal sports and transport minister Madan Mitra may have been behind bars for over eight months now, but there seems to be no end to his fan following outside. His followers put up numerous banners, life-size placards and festoon across all vital installations, including the newly built state secretariat building, and busy traffic intersections to mobilise public support in favour of Mitra’s bail plea. They demanded immediate release of the minister who has been behind the bars since December 2014.Now after an extensive banner campaign, as many as 100 local clubs in Kolkata have decided to elect Madan Mitra as president of their organisation, in a bid to mount pressure on the Mamata Banerjee-led Bengal government to demand his release. “The forum was floated to mobilise public support for Madan Mitra. He is behind the bars for past eight months. He is still a member of the state cabinet but the state government is playing no role to demand for his release. It shows their indifference to the issue,” said a Trinamool Congress source and a close confidant of Mitra. He said Mitra’s contribution to the Trinamool Congress was enormous, especially during the Nandigram – Singur movement and when the party had reduced to only one Lok Sabha seat in the 2004 general elections. “It is unfortunate that the party and the government is keeping mum on the issue and our leader, Madan Da, is rotting behind the bars. This forum is floated to mount pressure on them,” he said. The West Bengal minister was arrested in December last year by the CBI for his alleged role in the Saradha Group chit fund scam under charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating and misappropriation of funds.advertisementlast_img
