Rendez-vous à Roland-Garros to be held in Delhi on April 18-19

first_imgNew Delhi, Feb 22 (PTI) A wildcard in the French Open junior at stake, top sixteen boys and girls will compete at Rendez-vous a Roland-Garros Masters at the DLTA Sports Complex here from April 18th to 19th to qualify for the playoffs in Paris, the organisers said today. A qualifying round will be held at Pune and Kolkata next month to select the top 16 boys and girls who will play at the third edition of the Masters in April. The main draw of the qualifiers will consist of 64 boys and 48 girls. The winners of the Indian leg will then go on to face the winners from Brazil, South Korea, China, Japan & the United States in the playoffs in Paris and the eventual champions will get a wild card entry to the French Open Junior. Three time Roland Garros winner Arantxa Sanchez Vicario will attend the Masters in New Delhi as the brand ambassador for Rendez-Vous Roland-Garros in partnership with Longines. “I am extremely excited to be part of the Rendez-Vous Roland-Garros in partnership with Longines. Such initiatives help us grow the talent map for tennis across the world and I am very impressed with the Indian talent I am seeing today in the global circuit,” Arantxa said. “I have always felt that learning tennis on clay builds a very strong foundation for young talent. Having global partners like Longines really helps such tournaments to grow and nurture grass roots level talent.” The French Tennis Federation (FFT) in association with All India Tennis Association (AITA) today announced the much awaited third Indian edition of Rendez-Vous Roland-Garros in partnership with Longines. “We have made a long term and solemn commitment to nurture and encourage talent from India. Last year we worked closely with AITA and created new clay courts. This year we have added another dimension with the inclusion of the qualifiers in Kolkata and Pune allowing for more players to vie for this golden opportunity,” said Sam Primaut, French Tennis Federation (FFT), Director of Development. Welcoming this years edition of the Rendez-Vous Roland-Garros, AITA president Praveen Mahajan said, “AITA is committed to its partnership with the FFT and we are extremely happy to see the progress of this initiative growing each year since the past three years. “The opportunity that the Rendez-Vous Roland-Garros provides is excellent and we want to encourage more talent to participate, hence the decision to add a qualifiers leg and integrate it into our calendar and ranking points. We want to use this measure to increase the talent pool and scout for the best to represent us at the finals in Paris.” PTI ATK ATKadvertisementlast_img read more

Antonio Conte believes FA Cup will be much harder to win than last year

first_imgnews Chelsea FA Cup Share on Messenger Topics The Observer Share on Twitter Share on Facebook Southampton Read more Antonio Conte believes Chelsea passed up “a great chance” to win the FA Cup last season and will find success this year far harder to come by as they prepare for Sunday’s semi‑final against Southampton. The Italian, who has yet to claim a knockout trophy as a manager, had seen his team secure the Premier League title by seven points last term, finishing 18 clear of Arsenal, their opponents in the cup final. Yet Chelsea failed to maintain the high standards they had set – they won 19 of their last 23 fixtures in all competitions before the showpiece – and his 10 men succumbed to a late Aaron Ramsey goal to lose 2-1. Share via Email Share on WhatsApp It is harder to manage Chelsea than Burnley, claims Antonio Conte Antonio Conte Share on Pinterest Share on LinkedIn Conte was speaking before knowing that Manchester United, rather than Spurs, would await in the final if Southampton, struggling badly in the top flight, were overcome. “I must be honest: last season, we missed a great chance to win the FA Cup,” said Conte. “This season, if we can win against Southampton and reach the final, it would be more difficult against Tottenham or United. Last season we were in the best condition to try to go and win the FA Cup, and we missed that chance. It was our fault.“I remember that some refereeing decisions were not good. The first goal scored by [Alexis] Sánchez was handball, and we finished the game with 10 men [after Victor Moses’ dismissal for two bookings]. But, despite this, we were able to equalise only to concede a goal at the last with our mistake. Arsenal did a great job to win the FA Cup but we could have done better. At that moment we were stronger than them. This season, it would be more difficult to win it.”Conte, who is expected to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer, will not be appeased for a difficult campaign by a second successive appearance in the FA Cup final. “You have to know that I play only to win,” he said. “I don’t play to enjoy. I play only to win. Every season I start the season with only one idea in my mind, in my heart, in my soul: to win.“If I win something, I did my job, not something special. If we don’t win, I’m very angry, above all with myself. But I’m ready to work harder to try and win something the next chance I have.”Southampton were overcome in a league meeting between the sides last Saturday despite Chelsea trailing 2-0 at St Mary’s with 20 minutes remaining. Olivier Giroud, who should start at Wembley, transformed that occasion following his introduction from the bench, and Conte hopes his players have learned lessons from the contest on the south coast.“If we are the team that played the first half and a part of the second half, we must be concerned, really concerned,” added Chelsea’s head coach. “But if we go to play with the right team spirit, we have a possibility of reaching the final. My players have to go on to the pitch with the right fire in their eyes, with the right desire to reach the final, and with our crowd with us. We must give them the best satisfaction.” Reuse this contentlast_img read more

Strange New College Football Bowl Sponsor Is Going Viral

first_imgThe crazy Hail Mary touchdown at the end of the 2014 Bahamas Bowl. After losing backing from Popeye’s after its first three seasons, the Bahamas Bowl has a new sponsor: the town of Elk Grove Village, Illinois.Yes, really. This evening, the town of just over 30,000 people announced sponsorship of the scenic MAC vs. Conference USA bowl game, which will now feature the town’s slogan “Makers Wanted”.Elk Grove Village, which is located right near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, is home to over 5,500 business and 300 manufacturers. The town previously advertised during Chicago Cubs games, and saw a serious increase in traffic to the town website. That sports hook inspired this new deal. The bemused, and largely entertaining reaction is probably exactly what mayor Craig Johnson was looking for. Forbes spoke to Craig Johnson about the Makers Wanted Bahamas Bowl in line with today’s announcement.“Last season, I was watching all these bowl games for four straight days,” explained Johnson. “And as I was watching one of the smaller bowl games, I could just see our slogan painted on the field.”[…]“Last year when the Cubs started baseball at the end of March, our website traffic jumped up to 50 times higher than before the season. Then at the end of the season we looked again, and it was down 150-200%.”Johnson also shared anecdotal evidence from a recent car buying experience.“I went to buy a car and the salesman save Elk Grove Village on my paperwork. He looked at me and said, ‘Makers Wanted.” I asked him how he knew our slogans and he said it was from the Cubs games.”Even the smallest bowl games tend to rate quite well in December, especially in the days during the holiday season when people are home and there isn’t much competition on television. The Bahamas Bowl has been particularly entertaining in its short history. The first edition of the game in 2014 featured one of the wackiest finishes you’ll ever see. Johnson and his town are definitely hoping for more of that in what is now the Makers Wanted Bahamas Bowl.[Forbes]last_img read more

This Brutalist Revival Home in Greece Stands Out By Blending In

first_imgOOAK ArchitectsFew countries in the world can boast an architectural pedigree like Greece. With structures like the Parthenon dating back to ancient times, the country’s historic style has influenced building designs around the world for over two millennia. Beyond the Classical style, Greece is also famous for the white stucco structures known as Cycladic architecture (think the cliffside villages of Santorini). So in a country full of rich architecture, how do you create something new? That was the challenge for Swedish architectural firm OOAK. Located on the island of Karpathos, Patio House is unlike the standard Grecian home. While Karpathos is filled with the famous Cycladic style of brightly painted homes, OOAK went in the opposite direction, using the natural rocky landscape as inspiration.Perched precariously on a cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea and the popular windsurfing beach Afiarti, Patio House was designed to blend in with the land rather than stand out. It was important to the owners that the home not compete with the natural beauty of the landscape. This resulted in a Brutalist Revival style home – a simple gray concrete structure topped with a gravel roof. The basic square shape of the home doesn’t mean Patio House is boring, far from it. OOAK added in dramatic features that turned this vacation home into something truly special. OOAK Architects The rugged cliff was a challenging site to work with. The solution was to cantilever part of the home out over the hillside. This not only created a visually intriguing home, it allowed the team at OOAK to preserve as much of the land as possible. The cliff also provided a unique opportunity to make an outdoor living space. Situated below the home, the outdoor living room acts as a connection between the house and the sea. Accessed by a set of stairs that lead from inside the home and down under the cantilevered section, the patio includes an outdoor kitchen, dining area, and lounge space with unobstructed views of the water below.Patio House blurs the lines between indoors and out. The entry features a massive sliding wooden door that, once open, reveals an interior courtyard. Beyond the courtyard, the public space of the home is an open plan family room with a living area, dining space, and kitchen. Beyond the kitchen there are two bedrooms and a bathroom while on the other side of the home is the master suite. All of the rooms feature massive windows that frame beautiful views of the water and hillside. The part of the home that cantilevers out was turned into an open-air dining room, leaving diners feeling like they are floating above the water. The home is decked out in a minimalist Mediterranean style. Bright white walls, stone tile flooring, and warm toned furnishings reflect the traditional Cycladic style while still feeling fresh and modern. The result is a bright and airy home perfect for relaxing and taking in the views after a day on the water. To get a taste of the Greek islands in your own life (since we all can’t own a cliffside home there), try out this great Greek short rib recipe. Neymar could make PSG return today says coach

first_imgParis: Neymar could return to action for Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday after four months of injury-enforced absence after the Brazilian was selected in the matchday squad for the Ligue 1 match against Strasbourg. PSG coach Thomas Tuchel said: “We have ‘Ney’ in our squad, for sure”, adding “he needs to make his comeback”. Neymar, the world’s most expensive player, has had to come to terms with the prospect of a third season in Ligue 1 after PSG and his former club Barcelona failed to agree terms on a move before the transfer window shut on September 2. Neymar has since been away on international duty for Brazil in two friendly matches in the United States, scoring one goal and making another in a 2-2 draw with Colombia and then coming on as a substitute in a 1-0 loss to Peru. Those were his first appearances this season after the 27-year-old was left out of PSG’s opening four league games amid the uncertainty over his future.last_img read more

Mint apologizes for commemorative coin veterans group calls flawed

first_imgDIEPPE, N.B. – It was officially code-named Operation Jubilee and the allied attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe was a pivotal moment in the Second World War. But 75 years later, a battle is brewing over just what to call the bloody assault that claimed the lives of nearly a thousand Canadian soldiers. The Royal Canadian Mint issued a collector coin in May commemorating the Battle of Dieppe, prompting outcry from a New Brunswick veterans’ group that says the attack is called the Dieppe Raid. After months of growing tension over the silver coin, which depicts a soldier rushing ashore with explosions in the distance, a truce has been called. The mint said Monday it understands the concerns expressed by the veterans’ group and apologized if the coin offended anyone. It also plans to produce a Dieppe Raid collector coin in 2018.But the current coin, roughly 28 grams of pure silver with a price tag of about $93, will continue to be sold as part of the mint’s Second World War battlefront series, something a military historian calls a mistake.“That’s a bad idea,” Dieppe Military Veterans’ Association historian Ronald Cormier said. “The coin is wrong. It’s like showing a picture of the Parliament Buildings and calling it the House of Commons. It’s inaccurate.”Keith Brewer, executive director of the veterans’ group, said if the error is allowed to stand, history will be “changed forever.”“The 913 Canadians who died on the beaches of Dieppe during the raid would be misrepresented in history,” he said. “That’s our objection.”Although Brewer said he’s “not comfortable” with the mint’s plans to continue selling the flawed coin, he said he hopes the new Dieppe Raid coin will “offset” the previous coin’s impact. The crux of the issue has to do with the difference between a raid and a battle, and what took place on Aug. 19, 1942.“In a battle, you go and take ground and you try to hold it, like Vimy Ridge,” Brewer said. “But in raid, you go in and do your dirty work and you get out.”A spokesman for the mint said it consulted with the Department of National Defence’s history and heritage directorate to confirm the accuracy of the coin before producing the commemorative item.“We consulted … military historians on the design of the coin commemorating the 75th anniversary of Dieppe and they confirmed that using ‘The Battle of Dieppe’ … was appropriate,” Alex Reeves said in an email.Despite the mint’s position that the coin was thoroughly vetted by military historians, the Crown corporation said it will review its design for a new Dieppe Raid coin with the New Brunswick veterans’ group. But Cormier, who has studied the Second World War and the Dieppe Raid for decades, said he finds it hard to believe that a military historian would have signed off on the coin. Both the Canadian War Museum and Veterans Affairs Canada refer to the attack on the French port city as the Dieppe Raid.Dalhousie University history professor Christopher Bell, who specialized in military history, said it should be called the Dieppe Raid.“I can’t recall ever hearing it referred to as the Battle of Dieppe,” he said. The mint produced 7,500 coins referring to the Battle of Dieppe, about half of which have been sold so far.— By Brett Bundale in Halifaxlast_img read more
